Why the release liner no longer needs to be slowing down your automotive adhesive pad assembly process.
Automotive assembly lines are faster and more fluid than ever before, until you get to the adhesive pads, the double-sided mounting pads that hold and enable trim, sensors, interior components or insulation into place, and then the line slows down. Usually, it’s a manual and precise process that takes time to peel each liner away.
That slowdown usually has nothing to do with the adhesive itself. It comes down to one often overlooked component known as the release liner.
Many double-sided adhesive pads are still supplied on individual sheets rather than in continuous roll form. Sheet-fed production makes sense when parts are placed by hand, but it creates a hard ceiling for automation. A pick-and-place robot or automated dispensing system needs a predictable, uninterrupted feed to work from. A stack of sheets, each with its own liner edges and handling requirements, doesn’t give it that system. The result is a manual step wedged into an otherwise automated process, which makes for a slower and more variable process than manufacturers want it to be.
The fix isn’t a different adhesive, nor deciding whether you want paper or film. It’s designing the pad and its liner as a single continuous system from the start. When, for example, a double-sided adhesive pad sits on one uninterrupted liner (rather than being cut and packaged as a loose sheet) it can be wound, indexed, and fed through automated equipment the same way a label web is. That continuity is what allows a dispensing system to present each pad, release it cleanly, and place it, without ever needing to touch the part.
For manufacturers moving toward roll-to-roll (R2R) assembly, this is the detail that decides whether an adhesive component can join the automated line or has to remain as a manual station. Getting the liner construction right at the design stage, from the release level, substrate, and web format, is what makes that transition possible later.
A release liner is the coated paper or film that carries and protects an adhesive (whether that’s pressure-sensitive or can’t peel and leave residue) until it’s ready to be applied. It’s often called a carrier or backing, and its job is simple but critical, to shield the adhesive from contamination and damage, then let go of it cleanly at the moment of use. Liners are built from paper, film, or specialty substrates, and coated (usually with silicone, but this can depend on the application) to control exactly how easily the adhesive releases.
If you get that release level wrong, you either fight the liner to remove the part or risk it letting go too early on the line. But when done correctly, the liner becomes invisible to the process and ensures a swift and smooth assembly process, which is exactly the point.
Traceability and barcode labels, warning and instruction labels, and thermal interface and EV battery materials all rely on the same principle: a liner that releases predictably, every time, at production speed. Labels built for durability and legibility over the life of the vehicle still need to come off their liner cleanly during assembly, whether that’s a UL/CSA-certified polyester label, a barcode label designed for supply chain tracking, or a warning label with anti-tamper features.
Materials commonly used across these applications, such as polypropylene, polyethylene, polyester, polyamide, and paper, each behave differently on a liner, and each combination of adhesive, base material, and liner needs to be validated together rather than treated as interchangeable parts.
